302 words; about a 2 minute read
Mission:
Sim Logs
Location: Channel 21
A woman with dark skin and elaborate black hair smiles at the camera. Today, she is wearing a yellow toga, colorful ink twisting all up and down her bare arm and shoulder in a pattern of leaves, vines, and flowers. Behind her is a screen that has a lovely globe hanging in the void of Space. Below it are the words 'Delta Veridis II'. “Today, on Anthropology on Demand, we come to Delta Veridis II, a previously-unexplored planet on the outskirts of Federation space. This remarkable planet is M-class, and full of life--plant life, that is. According to reports from the crew of the Federation Starship Potemkin, this planet has no animal or insect life whatsoever, and no evidence of there ever having been any. Yet the forests thrive, through a combination of self-germinating plants, wind, and simple time. But most remarkable of all, the plants have evolved a consciousness, a living mind consisting of all the vegetation in an area. One such consciousness, identifying themself only as ‘We’, actually spoke with members of the Potemkin’s crew, for a period of about three days. Reports of the contents of these conversations are not available at this time, but it is understood that much of what we know of this planet was derived from those conversations. Early investigations indicate that a consciousness similar to We might be found on every continent of this planet, despite the vast differences in environment and plant types that live in different zones and ecologies. That’s all for tonight’s segment, I am Iris Strattenhold, and I’ll see you next week!”
The screen switches to images of various planets and creatures, and text appears across the images: to find out about new species, planets, and anomalies as they are discovered, subscribe to Anthropology on Demand!
