906 words; about a 5 minute read
Mission:
Joint Logs
Location: Ivo and Bagh’s quarters, USS Potemkin
Timeline: Friday, April 14, 2400, 2100 hours
Anya was reading to herself on the bed, her usual tattered book in her hands. She had switched to her normal pajamas of sweat pants and a T-shirt.
A weight dented the side of the bed as Henry sat next to her. “I swear, if I have to read ‘The Big Orange Splot’ again, I am going to be able to do it without looking at the words for the rest of my life.”
Anya giggled. “That's good though…. You could start slipping in other random words to see if he's paying attention. That used to make Niavra laugh.” Anya smiled wistfully. “He finally fell asleep though?”
“He did. Don't be surprised if he joins us later tonight, though. His night terrors are still pretty bad and he doesn't want to sleep.” Henry pinched the bridge of his nose, a telltale sign of stress, for him.
“It'll be a while before they go away, if ever.” Anya set her book on the bedside table, reaching for his shoulders and massaging them gently. “Remind me to teach him a few tricks I learned when I was his age.” She gently worked on a knot in his muscles as they spoke.
“Mm.” Henry leaned into her hands in the pure creature comfort of a friendly touch. “That feels good.”
“I don't always use my knowledge of anatomy for fighting.” She smiled a bit as she worked.
“I know,” Henry looked up at her with a wicked grin.
“I meant massage.” She leaned forward and kissed his shoulder. “Besides, you have other knots that should be worked out before any of that happens.” She continued gently. “Parenting is stressful. I can tell it's taking a toll on you.”
Henry became serious again as she spoke. “You’re right. When I think about what could have happened...” he shivered.
She hugged him tight from behind. “I know.” She sighed as she held him. “I worry about it too.”
“I think I have an idea to put both our minds to rest.” Henry murmured after a few moments of silence.
“Oh? What's that?” She questioned.
“Give me a few days, I want to make sure it’ll work first.” Henry replied, thoughtfully.
Anya nodded. “ Let me know what you need from me, parmaq” she kissed his neck softly, letting him think.

Anya smiled as she sauntered into the bedroom.
“Turns out he did pay attention… though we may have to read ‘The Gigantic Green Splot’ from now on. Sean seemed to like it.” Anya grinned as she wrapped her braids up and secured them into a silk.
Henry chuckled. “Honestly, I’m just glad he lets you read to him now. I was able to get my report done before bed for once!”
“Oh good, so I get you instead of the PADD getting you tonight?” She smirked.
“Sure do,” Henry grinned. “I have something for you.” He added, after a pause.
“Oh? What is it?” She sat on the bed looking to him.
He stood up from his desk and took something out of a drawer. It was a small black box, about three inches squared. A little shyly, he handed it to her.
She raised an eyebrow at him as she opened it slowly, making sure not to break the box.
“My comm badge?” She questioned.
“I made some modifications to it. If you tap it twice, it’ll tell me that you’re in trouble, without making noise on your end. It's not much, but it’ll make me feel better, knowing you have it with you.” Henry responded, looking a little nervous.
Anya’s eyes lit up as she stood to hug him. “Thank you,” she tried to not seem too excited, not wanting to wake the kids. “Does yours do the same?” she grinned, kissing his cheek.
“Yes, and I gave one to Sean too. His alerts both of us. I hope it'll help with the nightmares.” Henry replied.
“I love it.” Anya hugged him again. “It's perfect.” Her grin spread from ear to ear.
Henry looked a little embarrassed, but pleased. “I'm glad you like it.”
“You're always so thoughtful. Of course, I like it.” she could hardly wipe the smile off her face as she sat, turning the badge over in her hands.
Henry leaned on her side. Seated, she was still almost a head taller than him, which made her shoulder a perfect place to rest his head. Which he did. “Promise me you’ll use it, if you ever get into trouble?”
“Promise,” she side hugged him, “as long as you'll do the same, parmaq.” She tapped it twice to test it.
Henry’s comm badge chirped at him; it was a different noise than it usually made, and it made him jump a little, even having expected it.
“Interesting.” She placed the comm badge on the bedside table as she looked at him. “Sorry, I had to test it.”
“It's okay, Sean did the same thing,” Henry chuckled.
“Great minds think alike.” She grinned as she laid back on the bed. “We should get some sleep. I have one more trip to the planet's surface tomorrow with the captain for the ship upgrades, then we go to his party tomorrow night…” she sighed.
“Would it help you sleep if I gave your back a massage?” Henry asked, grinning.
“I think it might.” She smirked.
